What You Should Know about Holiday Cocktails and Your Skin

Let’s face it, there is a very good reason that most of us make resolutions and goals at the start of new year – the holiday season can do a number on our bodies inside and out. We travel more, shop more, overindulge on sweets and treats, and yes, we even tend to drink a bit more. And while those cocktails may help ease holiday stress, they can wreak havoc on our skin. Unfortunately, alcohol dehydrates your skin and can reduce its suppleness and elasticity.

You can refresh your skin by drinking plenty of water and using high-quality skincare products, like Signature Skin’s Revitalizing Facial Cleanser and Moisturizer. And if you choose to enjoy alcohol over the holidays, here are some tips for finding the least harmful holiday cocktails for your healthy skin.

Choose Clear Liquors – They are Less Damaging

While they are not exactly good for your skin, clear liquors like vodka, gin, and tequila are a better choice over the darker liquors. Spirits like rum or whiskey have congeners in them, which are impurities created during the fermentation process. Congeners add to the flavor and fragrance of the alcohol, but the higher the content of congeners, the more potential damage to your skin.

Avoid Sugary Mixed Drinks

We all know the kind of damage sugar can do to your skin – and it may be hard enough to turn down cookies, cakes, and candies this time of year. But also keep in mind sugar content when choosing a holiday cocktail. Mix spirits with sparkling water instead of sugary soda or fruit juice.  Too much sugar can lead to inflammation and premature aging of your skin.  You can also use citrus for an extra boost of antioxidants.

Try an Infused Drink

Infused drinks are a fantastic way to enjoy great flavor without the added sugar of juices and sodas. And they can be less damaging to your skin. To create an infused drink, mix a combination of fruits, berries, spices, etc. in a jar with your favorite liquor and simply let it sit for three weeks or longer, then strain and enjoy. (You will have to plan ahead for this one.)

Here’s an idea for a fun holiday infused drink:

Pear and Cranberry Liqueur

Combine in a quart jar: 2 sliced Bartlett pears, ¼ cup dried cranberries, ½ TB peeled fresh ginger, 1 whole clove, 1 cinnamon stick, ¾ cup of Brandy, and 1 ½ cups of Vodka.

After three weeks (or longer) strain it with a cheesecloth or through a jelly bag and enjoy!

Care for Your Skin Year-Round

Have a wonderful and festive time this season. And remember, during the holidays and any other time of year, renew your skin daily with healthy habits and premium quality skincare products. Use Revitalizing Facial Cleanser and Moisturizer twice daily for fresh, youthful looking skin. You will notice a difference in how your skin feels within just a few days of use.
